"I Love You"

The words I had dreamt of, the words that I had always pictured on her lips, now escaped in a gasp that echoed with finality. Her eyes closed, her hand slipped from mine, and the echo of the heartbeat in her chest slowed.

It took me a moment for the shock and surprise to subside, leaving only silence as the soldiers around us remained absolutely still.

It was then that I realized what had happened.

Intense feelings of half fulfilled happiness and lingering emptiness filled me, leaving me craving for that warm smile, that laugh that sent my heart beating faster, only to realize that that moment would never come again.

She was gone.

"_." I whispered, The name lingering on my lips. It was a silent plea, a desperate call for her to open her eyes again. "_." I said, louder this time, my panic growing. She refused to respond. "_!" I screamed, bending over her hand.

Ahand rested on my shoulder. "Corporal..." I could tell it was one of my men who was trying to tear me away from her, even if it was gently.

I shoved the hand away, my hair falling over my face and hiding the grimace that was etched across my features.

"Get away from me." I growled, not bothering to look at them.

There was silence, and then a different voice spoke, deeper this time.

"Rivaille."

Erwin. I could feel him standing behind me. I tried to ignore him, to pretend like he wasn't there.

"Get up."

It was a command, not a request. There was not the slightest bit of sorrow or unhappiness in those words. It was a stern, strict voice that I had known ever since all those years ago.

I allowed myself a moment of pause, a final second of farewell before I let go of her hand, letting it rest gently against the stone ground. My eyes scanned her face again, just one last time.

She looked so peaceful laying there, almost as if she were simply asleep. But I knew she would never open those eyes again.

Abruptly, and very suddenly, a silent anger stirred within me. She was dead, never to smile or laugh or look at me with those beautiful eyes ever again.

I stood suddenly, my hands clenched into tight fists at my sides. My hair fell over my face haphazardly, and normally I would care, but right now, I was consumed by a rage so horrible, so fierce it frightened me.

I turned, ever so slightly, to the soldier that sat facing us, on his knees, his face like stone. A used rifle lay next to him.

Everything was completely silent in the pavilion, all eyes on me, waiting to see what my next move would be.

My footsteps were the only sound in the center as I walked slowly, ever so slowly, over to where the man knelt. He stared up at me, his face cold and unfeeling.

The soldier standing next to him glanced over at me, and must have been able to see the pure rage on my face for a brief moment, for tentatively, he spoke:

"Co-corporal..."

THWACK!

My boot connected with the man's face harshly, whipping his head to the side severely, resounding in a loud 'Crack!' to issue forth. Before he could even regain himself, my foot connected with his stomach, making his double over in pain, a cry escaping his throat. I Kicked his face upwards, breaking his nose in the process. Blood, bright red blood spilled from his nostrils, and it only served as a reminder to ______'s blood, which soaked my boots and stained my pants.

Never in my life had I been more angry than in that single moment. Blow after blow rained down on the man, even as his guard pleaded with me to stop, screaming at me to halt my actions. I didn't listen, continuing only to kick the man anywhere I could reach him, his face, his stomach, his head, his back, anywhere my boot could connect with.

At some point I lost sense of what I was doing. I could only hear the sound of my boot connecting with flesh, the song of teeth popping loose, and of blood spilling onto the stone floor.

It was only after the man stopped responding that I felt a pair of arms behind me, pulling me away from the unconscious man. I didn't try to struggle, I simple let myself be pulled away.

"That's enough, Rivaille." I heard Erwin say behind me. I didn't take notice of him. I let myself be held by his arms for a few moments, then I struggled free, standing away from him, looking down at my feet.

The entire squad looked to me, then to the man, who lay in a small puddle of his own blood.

I noticed that they had taken ______'s body away. Her blood remained, seeping into the stone.

The clouds above us rumbled ominously. The noise broke the silence that was hanging over the pavilion. Slowly, ever slowly, the soldiers began to trickle out, one by one, each shuffling along.

Small raindrops began to appear on the stone ground, dotting the gray surface until it turned dark.

The steady drizzle continued even as the last soldier walked away, leaving just Erwin and me.

The commander allowed me a few moments of silence. They stretched on for what seemed like an eternity. Finally, he walked past me, resting a hand n my shoulder and pausing right next to me.

"I'm so sorry."

With that, he left.

and I remained, staring up at the raining sky.

All characters belong to the makers of Shingeki no Kyojin.
Except for you, you belong to the Corporal. :3
That is, if you're not dead.

The question is, am I Partially Dead, Mostly Dead, or All Dead? (Anyone who gets that reference gets an Internet cookie.)
