Literature Text
I wish
I could tell you
Just how beautiful you are.
I wish
I could prevent
Those horrid words from ringing in your ears
Words like:
"I hate you"
"I hope you die"
And worst of all
"I never loved you."
I want to know
Who taught a boy
It was okay
To manipulate a girl
To the point
Where
Lacerations would litter her arms
Bruises would decorate her body
And tears would fall from her eyes
I want to know
what his mother said to him
To plant those horrid words in his mind
Dearest Sister
I wish I could protect you
From the horrors of
This cruel world.
I wish I could
Shield you
And
Cover yours ears
Block your sight
So you
Would no longer have
A reason to let the tears
Slip from your eyes

Big Sister
I am not my sister's keeper.
she is a lock-pick, a file system
of assorted secrets
spilled across the couch like a
a jar of sequins and buttons
I am not my sister's keeper.
But I hold her hair back while she pukes,
and break the news to her evenly
waiting for the decline of her wailing
like the tumbling of retreating curls on
ocean docks.
She swings her feet off the edge,
I build her wings.

Good Girl
"Good girl." He whispers quietly,
As I sit alone so silently.
"Good girl." He says on a note
That I'm not even sure he wrote.
"Good girl." He says so fast,
Just like he has in days past.
"Good girl." Instead of bye,
Leaving me alone to cry.
"Good girl" is not "I love you,"
But say that, he'll never do.
"Good girl." For not talking.
"Good girl." For not asking.
"Good girl." He says no more,
For this good girl is out the door.

flowers wither
in the fields
soldiers fight upon;
and they bloom
across the fields
children dance upon.

My Sister came to me today, sobbing
and telling me about a boy who had hurt her.
I wish I could stop her from crying.
