You knew.
You knew as soon as you saw the look in his eyes after the colossal titan appeared in Trost. You knew as his eyes connected with yours, and time seemed to to stop for the both of you. You knew as tears of hurt and betrayal filled your eyes.
Then, his arms were there, wrapping around you protectively, comfortingly. You couldn't stop yourself from responding, clinging tightly onto your best friend and weeping openly. From that moment on, you knew there was no going back. You could't stop yourself from falling for him, despite his horrible misdoings.
Everyone else normally assumed that you two had a thing, that this was normal. They didn't know that you cried to yourself night after night for loving someone who could have done such a horrible thing. They didn't know the web of lies you two were now entangled in.
You wanted to cry out for help, but you couldn't do that if you didn't want to betray your friends. You had no choice but to let them keep controlling you.
You looked up to Bertholdt, who lay beside you, his chin resting above your head. Tears sprang to your eyes. Again and again you screamed at yourself for letting yourself fall into the web of lies he had created for you, by letting him ensnare you with kind words and a gentle touch.
There he was again, wiping away your silver tears, a gentle and concerned smile on his face. You hated yourself for loving him, you hated him for loving you back. But there was nothing you could do to stop it.
You wrapped your arms around his torso, crying with despair and sadness into his chest, staining his shirt with your tears.
He murmured sweet words to you, condolences and apologies. You tried to ignore them, but you couldn't help but let him pull you closer to his body, and placing gentle kisses into your hair.
"I hate you" You couldn't help but think.
You both were silent, your tears drying on your cheeks. Bertholdt had his eyes closed. You knew you should take this chance, wrap your hands around his neck, deprive him of any breath until he would breathe now more, and humanity would be safe.
Instead, you leaned up and pressed an ever so gentle kiss to his jawline, making the tall brunette stiffen a bit, then relax, a pink blush dusting his cheeks.
You snuggled closer to him, entangling your legs with his. Bertholdt let his hands rest on your waist.
"I love you." You thought to yourself.
Berthold let a hand wander to your hair, where it tangled itself into your silky locks. Bertholdt exhaled silently. You felt his chest expand and deflate with the breath.
"You'll always be my side, right (Name)?"
You paused, hesitation clouding your mind. Now was your chance to say no, to pry yourself away from him.
Instead you whispered:
"Yes."
It was only once he had escaped beyond Wall Maria that you realized what a horrible, horrible thing you had done.

“_____! What are you doing here?” Reiner reaches out and sweeps you into a giant bear hug, his chin nuzzling the top of your head. You smile and wrap your arms tighter around him.
“Nothing much! I finished training early, so I thought I’d come help you out with some chores!” You laugh, pulling away from him and grabbing a shovel.

Wall Rose has fallen.
You stumble through the streets, staring into empty space. The town, which had been so vibrant and lively a few hours ago, is now a blood-stained battlefield and a barren wasteland. Even the titans had disappeared, continuing southward in search of more prey.
You're alone.
There’s nothing left, except for a few half-standing houses, rubble, and deep indentations on the ground where the titans had stood as they reached down to pick up humans. In my mind, if Reader fell in love with bertholdt, then found out his secret, Bertholdt would use her love for him against her, and make her dependent on him, and ultimately end up controlling her through her own emotions.
